Curiosity Just Celebrated Its Fifth Martian Year on The Red Planet

Curiosity has been exploring the surface of Mars since it landed on August 6, 2012. The rover is equipped with many scientific instruments that allow it to examine the planet’s rocks and soil while also collecting data about the Martian atmosphere and climate.

Since its arrival on Mars, Curiosity has drilled into two rocks: Windjana (a name given by Aboriginal Australians) and Telegraph Peak (named after Morse code messages sent by telegraph operators during Shackleton’s 1914 expedition). It has also collected samples from five other locations across Gale Crater. In addition to drilling into rock formations, Curiosity uses its Chemistry & Mineralogy X-ray diffraction instrument (CheMin) for mineral analysis; its Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite (SAM), which includes an organic chemistry lab; and its Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD), which measures radiation levels inside the vehicle as well as outside it.
